Resistor color bands are a compact way of printing a component's resistance value and tolerance directly onto its body without needing enough space for printed text. The system was standardized internationally as IEC 60062, and it has barely changed since the mid-20th century — the same ten colors representing digits 0 through 9 are still used on resistors manufactured today.
This calculator lets you build a resistor visually: tap the colored bands that match the physical resistor in your hand, and it decodes the resistance, tolerance, and acceptable value range in real time. It supports both the simpler 4-band format (two significant digits) used on general-purpose resistors, and the more precise 5-band format (three significant digits) used on precision and instrumentation resistors.
A 4-band resistor with bands Yellow-Violet-Red-Gold decodes as: digit 4, digit 7, multiplier ×100, giving 47 × 100 = 4,700 Ω = 4.7 kΩ, with a gold tolerance band meaning ±5%. The acceptable range is therefore 4.465 kΩ to 4.935 kΩ.
