What is Wordle?

Wordle is a captivating daily word puzzle that challenges players to guess a five-letter word within six attempts. Created by Josh Wardle in 2021, it became a global phenomenon with millions of daily players sharing their results across social media. The Calculora version supports 13 languages — each with its own curated word list and daily word — and is completely free to play in your browser.

The Origin of Wordle

Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Brooklyn, created Wordle as a gift for his partner who loved word games. He never intended for it to go viral. When it launched in October 2021, it had only 90 players by November. By January 2022, it had grown to 300,000 players, and by February 2022, it surpassed 2 million daily players. The Calculora edition builds on this classic format, adapting it for 13 languages so players worldwide can enjoy the puzzle in their native tongue.

How to Play Wordle

Each day, players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. After each guess, the tiles change color to provide feedback: a green tile means the letter is correct and in the right position, a yellow tile means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position, and a gray tile means the letter is not in the word at all. Use the process of elimination to narrow down the possibilities and find the correct word before running out of attempts.

Tips & Strategies

Start with a word that has plenty of vowels like "ADIEU" or "AUDIO". Common consonants like R, S, and T can help narrow down possibilities. Pay attention to the color feedback and use the process of elimination. Try not to repeat letters you have already eliminated. Use the practice mode to improve your skills before tackling the daily puzzle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play more than once per day?
Yes! While the daily puzzle is one per day, our unlimited practice mode lets you play as many rounds as you want with random words.
Is Wordle free to play?
Absolutely! Wordle is completely free to play with no sign-ups or data collection. Enjoy the daily puzzle and unlimited practice mode at no cost.
How are daily words chosen?
Daily words are chosen deterministically using today's date as a seed. A hash function converts the date into an index that picks a word from that language's solutions list. Each language has its own curated word list — English has over 2,300 words, and other languages each have thousands. All players using the same language see the same word on the same day.
What do the colors mean?
Green = correct letter in the right position. Yellow = correct letter but wrong position. Gray = letter not in the word at all. Use these clues to narrow down possibilities.
What is Hard Mode?
Hard Mode forces you to use any revealed hints in your subsequent guesses. If a letter is marked green or yellow, you must include it in all following guesses. This eliminates random guessing and adds an extra layer of challenge.
Does Wordle use the same word for everyone?
In daily mode, all players using the same language get the same word on the same day — so English players share a word, Arabic players share a different word, and so on. Each language has its own daily word drawn from its own curated list.
Is there a mobile app?
Wordle is a web-based game that works perfectly on any device with a modern browser. Simply visit Calculora on your phone, tablet, or computer to play. No app download needed.
Can I change the word length?
Currently we support 5-letter words, the classic Wordle format. We may add additional word lengths in future updates.
