What is Calories Burned Calculator?
The Calories Burned Calculator estimates energy expenditure during physical activities using the Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) values from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities (Herrmann et al., 2024). A MET value represents the ratio of energy expended during an activity to the energy expended at rest. For example, a MET of 8 means the activity burns 8 times the calories of sitting quietly. This tool also includes a Precise mode for walking and running that uses American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) equations for greater accuracy.
When to Use This Calculator
- When planning weight loss or maintenance and need calorie expenditure data.
- When comparing different exercises for time-efficient calorie burning.
- When setting up a training program with specific energy expenditure goals.
- When tracking fitness progress and energy balance over weeks and months.
- When walking or running and want precise estimates using speed and incline.
- When logging activity data in a calorie-tracking app or diary.
Steps:
- Choose Standard mode for any activity or Precise mode for walking/running.
- Search and select an activity from the grouped dropdown.
- Enter your body weight and the duration of the activity.
- Review total calories burned, per-hour rate, and net vs gross values.
- Check the weekly and monthly projections based on your sessions per week.
- Compare your activity to 5 common exercises on the bar chart.
- Switch to kJ if you prefer kilojoules as the energy unit.
Formula
Standard formula: Calories = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) / 200 × duration (min). Net calories exclude resting metabolic rate: Net = (MET − 1) × 3.5 × weight / 200 × duration. Precise walking: VO₂ = 0.1·S + 1.8·S·G + 3.5 (S in m/min, G as fraction). Precise running: VO₂ = 0.2·S + 0.9·S·G + 3.5. kcal/min = VO₂ × weight / 1000 × 5.
Use Cases
- Estimate calorie expenditure for weight loss or maintenance planning.
- Compare energy cost of different exercises to choose the most efficient workout.
- Track weekly and monthly calorie burn to match your dietary intake.
- Use Precise mode for walking or running with specific speed and incline.
- Plan exercise sessions to meet a target calorie deficit.
- Evaluate whether an activity is moderate (3–6 MET) or vigorous (>6 MET) intensity.
- Log activity calories in a fitness tracker or food diary.
Key Benefits
- Access 80+ activities with scientifically validated MET values.
- Switch between Standard and Precise modes for different accuracy levels.
- See net calories (excluding resting metabolism) for realistic deficit planning.
- View weekly and monthly projections to track long-term energy balance.
- Compare activities side by side on an interactive bar chart.
- Supports metric (kcal) and kilojoule (kJ) energy units.
- Free, private, no sign-up required.
Pro Tips
- For walking or running, use Precise mode with your actual speed and grade for the most accurate estimate.
- Focus on net calories to understand the true energy cost of exercise above rest.
- Consider activities with MET 3–6 for moderate-intensity guidelines (150 min/week).
- For vigorous exercise (>6 MET), the CDC recommends 75 min/week minimum.
- Pair calorie estimates with a food tracking app for accurate energy balance.
- Remember that calorie estimates are approximations — consistency matters more than precision.
- Use the weekly projection to see how small daily activities add up over time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using MET values without considering body weight — heavier individuals burn more calories.
- Confusing gross calories (total expenditure) with net calories (exercise-only).
- Ignoring duration — a high MET activity for 5 minutes may burn fewer calories than a moderate activity for 60 minutes.
- Not accounting for fitness level — trained individuals may have slightly lower actual energy expenditure.
- Assuming MET values are exact for every individual — they are population averages.
- Using Standard mode for walking/running when Precise mode would be more accurate.
- Forgetting to adjust sessions per week when comparing different training schedules.
Key Terms Explained
- MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task)
- The ratio of energy expended during an activity to energy at rest. 1 MET = 3.5 ml O₂/kg/min.
- Gross Calories
- Total calories burned including resting metabolic rate during the activity.
- Net Calories
- Calories burned above resting metabolism — the additional energy cost of the exercise.
- ACSM Equations
- American College of Sports Medicine formulas for estimating VO₂ during walking and running.
- VO₂
- Volume of oxygen consumed per minute, measured in ml/kg/min. Used to calculate energy expenditure.
- Compendium of Physical Activities
- A standardized coding system that assigns MET values to over 1,000 physical activities.
- Fat Mass Equivalent
- Approximate body fat equivalent: ~7,700 kcal ≈ 1 kg of body fat. Labeled as rough estimate.
- Intensity Zones
- Light (<3 MET), Moderate (3–6 MET), Vigorous (>6 MET) based on ACSM classification.

Example
A 70 kg person running at 10 km/h for 60 minutes: MET = 8.0. Gross kcal = 8.0 × 3.5 × 70 / 200 × 60 = 588 kcal. Net kcal = (8.0 − 1) × 3.5 × 70 / 200 × 60 = 514.5 kcal. In Precise mode at 10 km/h flat: VO₂ = 0.2 × 166.7 + 0.9 × 166.7 × 0 + 3.5 = 36.83 ml/kg/min, yielding 12.89 kcal/min.
