Hijri Date Converter

Convert between Gregorian and Hijri (Islamic) dates. Free online Hijri calendar converter for Ramadan, Eid, and Islamic events.

What is Hijri Date Converter?

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of approximately 354 or 355 days. It is used to determine the dates of Islamic holidays and events such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Islamic New Year. The calendar begins from the Hijra (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.

Because the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, Islamic months shift earlier each Gregorian year. This converter helps you translate between the two calendar systems for planning and historical reference.

Formula

The conversion uses the Julian Day Number (JDN) as an intermediary:

Gregorian → JDN → Hijri
Hijri → JDN → Gregorian

The Hijri calendar has 30 years in a cycle with 11 leap years.
Months alternate between 29 and 30 days.

How to Calculate

  1. Choose the conversion direction (Gregorian to Hijri or vice versa).
  2. Enter the year, month, and day.
  3. Click Convert to see the equivalent date in the other calendar.
  4. Use the result for planning Islamic events or historical research.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Hijri year have fewer days?
The Hijri calendar is based on lunar cycles (29.5 days per month), while the Gregorian calendar is solar (365.25 days). A lunar year of 12 months is about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year.
Are Hijri dates the same worldwide?
Not always. Some countries rely on moon sighting to determine month beginnings, while others use astronomical calculations. This can cause 1-day differences between countries for Islamic holidays.
What is the current Hijri year?
The current Hijri year can be found by adding approximately 622 to the Gregorian year and adjusting for the 11-day annual difference. For 2025, the Hijri year spans 1446-1447 AH.
