Timezone Overlap Calculator

Find overlapping working hours between different timezones for remote teams. Free timezone overlap finder with visual hourly breakdown.

What is Timezone Overlap Calculator?

The Timezone Overlap Calculator is an essential tool for remote teams, freelancers, and anyone working across different time zones. It helps you find the best times for meetings, collaboration, and communication by identifying overlapping working hours between any two time zones.

With the rise of remote work and global teams, coordinating across time zones has become a daily challenge. A team member in New York (UTC-5) might want to schedule a meeting with a colleague in Tokyo (UTC+9), but their standard working hours barely overlap. This calculator visualizes the 24-hour day and clearly shows when both parties are available, making it easy to find the sweet spot for collaboration.

The tool includes a visual timezone map showing all major world time zones, a 24-hour breakdown chart that highlights overlap periods, and export functionality so you can share meeting time recommendations with your team.

Formula

Overlap is calculated by converting both timezones to a common reference (UTC) and finding the intersection of working hour ranges:

TZ2 equivalent of TZ1 hours = TZ1 hours + (TZ2 offset - TZ1 offset)
Overlap start = max(TZ2 work start, TZ2 equivalent of TZ1 work start)
Overlap end = min(TZ2 work end, TZ2 equivalent of TZ1 work end)
Overlap hours = Overlap end - Overlap start

How to Calculate

  1. Select the first timezone (e.g., New York, UTC-5).
  2. Set the working hours for timezone 1 (e.g., 9 AM to 5 PM).
  3. Select the second timezone (e.g., London, UTC+0).
  4. Set the working hours for timezone 2 (e.g., 9 AM to 5 PM).
  5. View the overlap hours, visual breakdown, and best meeting times.

Example

A team in New York (UTC-5, 9 AM-5 PM) wants to meet with a team in London (UTC+0, 9 AM-5 PM). The overlap is 5 hours: 9 AM-2 PM in New York corresponds to 2 PM-7 PM in London. The best meeting window is 9 AM-12 PM New York time (2 PM-5 PM London time), when both teams are fresh and productive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the best meeting time across timezones?
Select both timezones and set your working hours for each. The calculator will show you exactly how many hours overlap and highlight the best times for meetings. Aim for times that are reasonable (not too early or late) for all participants.
What if there's no overlap between timezones?
If there's zero overlap during standard working hours, consider flexible scheduling where one person starts early or stays late. Some teams rotate meeting times so the burden is shared equally.
Does this calculator account for daylight saving time?
This calculator uses fixed UTC offsets. During daylight saving time transitions, the actual offset may change by ±1 hour. Always double-check during DST transition periods (typically March and November in the US, March and October in Europe).
How many hours of overlap do I need for effective remote collaboration?
Ideally, 2-4 hours of overlap is sufficient for daily standups, quick syncs, and real-time collaboration. Less than 2 hours may require more async communication and careful scheduling.
Can I use this for more than two timezones?
This calculator compares two timezones at a time. For three or more timezones, run pairwise comparisons or use a world clock tool that shows multiple timezones simultaneously.
