Sheet

Joint Compound

How is the drywall area calculated?
Wall area = perimeter × ceiling height. Perimeter = 2 × (length + width). Ceiling area = length × width. Windows and doors are subtracted from the total. The net drywall area = walls + ceiling − openings. Sheets needed = ⌈net area ÷ sheet area⌉ (default sheet is 4×8 ft = 32 sq ft).
What drywall sheet sizes are available?
Standard drywall sheets come in 4×8 ft (32 sq ft), 4×10 ft (40 sq ft), and 4×12 ft (48 sq ft). The most common is 4×8 ft. Larger sheets reduce seams but are heavier and harder to handle. This calculator supports custom sheet dimensions.
How many screws do I need per sheet?
The industry standard is approximately 30 screws per 4×8 ft sheet. Screws should be placed every 12 inches along edges (where sheets meet studs) and every 12 inches in the field (center of the sheet). This calculator uses 30 screws per sheet as the default.
How much joint compound do I need?
One box (typically 17 lb or pre-mixed 5-gallon bucket) covers approximately 400 sq ft for a single coat. For Level 4 finish (two coats over tape), you need about 2 boxes per 400 sq ft. The amount increases with higher finish levels. This calculator adjusts compound quantity based on your selected finish level.
What is a drywall finish level?
Drywall finish levels range from 0 (no finishing) to 5 (skim coat). Level 3 is standard for rooms that will be carpeted. Level 4 is the most common for walls that will receive paint or wallpaper. Level 5 is used for high-gloss paint or critical lighting conditions where maximum smoothness is required.
How much tape do I need?
One roll of drywall tape (typically 75–300 ft) covers approximately 375 linear feet of joints. Joints include all where sheets meet (vertical and horizontal seams) plus inside corners. For a standard 12×14 ft room, you typically need about 1 roll.
Should I add a waste buffer?
Yes. The industry standard is 10% waste for straightforward rooms. Complex layouts with many corners, angles, or small spaces may require 15–20%. Waste accounts for cut pieces, mistakes, and damaged sheets. This calculator defaults to 10%.
How much does drywall installation cost?
Professional drywall installation typically costs $1.50–$3.50 per sq ft for labor alone, or $30–$60 per sheet installed. Material costs for a standard 4×8 ft sheet range from $12–$20. Total installed cost (material + labor) is typically $2.50–$5.00 per sq ft. This calculator lets you enter your local prices.
Can I use this calculator for ceilings only?
Yes. Simply set the room dimensions and leave windows and doors at zero. The calculator will compute ceiling drywall area, sheets, compound, tape, and screws. You can also add a separate room entry for walls if needed.
What is the difference between pre-mixed and dry compound?
Pre-mixed joint compound (ready-mud) comes in buckets and is ready to use — ideal for taping and first coats.
