Cos'e' Converti PNG in GIF?

Our free PNG to GIF converter transforms your PNG images into GIF files entirely within your browser. No uploads, no registration, complete privacy — just instant file conversion.

While PNG and WebP are the modern standard for web graphics, GIF maintains a unique place in digital culture and certain technical workflows. GIF is required by some legacy platforms, APIs, and older content management systems. Converting PNG images to GIF also gives them the ability to be used in environments that specifically support GIF animation workflows.

Our converter uses the HTML5 Canvas API to read your PNG and the omggif library to encode the output GIF with an optimized 256-color palette derived from your image's actual colors. This means the palette is specifically tailored to your image for the best possible quality within GIF's color limitations.

Come Calcolare

  1. Drag your PNG files onto the converter area, or click "Browse files" to select them.
  2. The converter loads your PNG images using the browser's Image API — no plugins required.
  3. Click "Convert" — each PNG is quantized to a 256-color palette and encoded as a GIF.
  4. Download each GIF using the individual download buttons.
  5. Open your GIF in any browser, image viewer, or application.

Vantaggi Principali

  • Compatible with legacy platforms and systems that specifically require GIF format

  • Smart color quantization — the 256-color palette is chosen from your image's actual colors for best quality
  • Free forever with no watermarks, file size limits, or registration
  • Works in any modern browser on desktop and mobile
  • Batch processing — convert multiple PNG files simultaneously

Casi d'Uso Comuni

Termini Chiave Spiegati

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
A bitmap image format supporting up to 256 colors per frame and lossless LZW compression — widely supported since 1987
Color quantization
The process of reducing a full-color image to a limited color palette (256 colors for GIF)
LZW compression
The lossless compression algorithm used by GIF — efficient for images with large areas of solid color
Binary transparency
GIF's transparency system where one palette color is designated as transparent — unlike PNG's full alpha channel
Color palette
The specific set of colors used in a GIF image — chosen from the image's actual colors to maximize visual accuracy

Consigli Pro

  • GIF works best for images with flat colors and hard edges — logos, icons, and illustrations convert well
  • For photographs and images with gradients or many colors, PNG or WebP will look much better
  • Keep GIF file sizes small by using images with limited color variation — fewer colors means better compression
  • GIF's 256-color limit was not a problem in the 1990s because most monitors only displayed 256 colors anyway
  • For animated output, use a dedicated GIF animation tool — this converter produces static GIF files

About the GIF Format

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was developed by CompuServe in 1987 and is one of the oldest widely-used image formats on the internet. It uses lossless LZW compression and supports a maximum of 256 colors per frame, making it ideal for simple graphics, logos, and animations but less suitable for photographs. GIF supports transparency through a simple palette-key mechanism (one color can be declared transparent) and supports animation through multiple frames stored in a single file. Despite being over 35 years old, GIF remains universally supported by every browser, operating system, and email client in existence. The format gained cultural significance with the rise of animated GIFs on social media and messaging platforms in the 2010s.

Domande Frequenti

Why would I convert a PNG to GIF?

GIF is required by some older platforms and tools. You may also convert to GIF to create simple web graphics that auto-play in environments that don't support modern formats, or for retro-style aesthetics.

Will there be quality loss when converting PNG to GIF?

Some color reduction may occur. GIF supports a maximum of 256 colors per frame, while PNG can display millions of colors. For simple graphics, icons, and logos, this difference is usually not visible. For photographs, consider PNG or WebP instead.

Are my images kept private?

Yes. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your PNG files never leave your device or get uploaded anywhere.

Can I convert multiple PNG files at once?

Yes. Drag in multiple PNG files and each will be converted to a separate GIF file, available for individual download.

Does the output GIF support transparency?

GIF supports single-color binary transparency (one color can be set as fully transparent). However, complex partial transparency (alpha channel) from PNG is not preserved in GIF — transparent areas will be visible on the GIF's white background.

Will my GIF animate?

Each input PNG file produces one output GIF. If you upload a single PNG, you get a single-frame static GIF. The tool is designed for per-image conversion, not for combining multiple PNGs into one animated GIF.
