How does the plate calculator work?
The calculator uses a greedy algorithm to determine the optimal combination of plates for each side of the bar. It starts with the largest available plate and works down to smaller plates, ensuring the total weight on each side is as close as possible to the target without exceeding it (or finds the closest achievable above if exact isn't possible).
What plates are included in the inventory?
The calculator supports standard IPF plate weights in both kilogram and pound schemes. Kilogram plates include 25kg, 20kg, 15kg, 10kg, 5kg, 2.5kg, 1.25kg, 0.5kg and 0.25kg. Pound plates include 45lb, 35lb, 25lb, 10lb, 5lb, 2.5lb and 1.25lb. Each plate color follows IPF competition standards, with the smaller change plates left as unthemed chrome discs.
What if I can't achieve the exact target weight?
If the exact target weight cannot be achieved with the available plates, the calculator shows two results: the closest achievable weight below the target, and the closest achievable weight above the target. This helps you understand the nearest possible loads when exact loading isn't possible.
How are the plates displayed on the bar diagram?
The SVG bar diagram visually displays the plate configuration using IPF plate colors. Each plate type has its designated color, making it easy to identify the weights at a glance. The bar shows plates on both sides of the bar, with the bar weight included in the total.
Can I use this calculator for both kg and lb units?

What is a warm-up plate sequence?
The warm-up generator creates a progressive sequence of plate loads starting with just the bar, then at 40%, 60%, 80%, and 90% of your target weight. Each step is rounded to the nearest loadable weight using the available plates. This helps you prepare your body and the bar before working sets.
How is the warm-up sequence generated?
The warm-up sequence follows these percentages of the target weight: bar × 10, 40% × 5 reps, 60% × 3 reps, 80% × 2 reps, 90% × 1 rep. Each percentage is rounded to the nearest loadable weight using the available plates in the selected unit system (kg or lb).
What IPF plate colors should I expect?
IPF competition plate colors are standardized by weight, not by unit: 25kg plates are red, 20kg plates are blue, 15kg plates are yellow, 10kg plates are green, and 5kg plates are white. The smaller 2.5kg, 1.25kg, 0.5kg and 0.25kg change plates are plain chrome discs with no assigned color. The calculator's bar diagram uses this same color scheme.
Can I customize the bar weight and collar weight?
Yes, you can specify the bar weight (default 20kg/45lb) and collar weight (default 2.5kg/5lb each). The calculator factors these into the total weight calculation, so the per-side load is calculated as: (targetWeight - barWeight - 2 × collarWeight) / 2.
What happens if I enter a weight that's too light for the bar?
If the target weight is less than the bar weight, the calculator will indicate that the weight is below the bar weight and cannot be loaded. The minimum loadable weight is the bar weight alone (with no plates).
